The infant made a rapid improvement over 24 hours. The fourth infant was born at term during a planned water birth, had normal Apgars, but developed respiratory distress at 10 minutes and needed respiratory support. Chest x-ray showed fluid in the lungs. The infant improved dramatically over 24 hours.

In California, a survey of 2,539 people who gave birth in the Listening to Mothers California study found that in 2016, 8% had used nitrous oxide during labor.
